The family of 21-year-old Margaret Wambui is demanding a thorough investigation after she died following a fall from the 22nd floor of Altura Apartments in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
A family in Kasarani is seeking answers following the death of their 21-year-old daughter, Margaret Wambui, who died after falling from the 22nd floor of Altura Apartments in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
According to the family, Wambui left home at around 7 pm on Saturday for her hotel internship but never arrived at her workplace. The family only learnt of her whereabouts after receiving a distressing call from one of her friends later that night.
How the Family Learned of Her Death
Wambui's mother, Wangari Gathogo, said her daughter's friend became concerned after repeated calls went unanswered, before someone else answered Wambui's phone and advised her to contact the family and report to the DCI Kilimani offices.
"She told me that she couldn't reach her and that she felt very uneasy, sensing that her friend was not okay. She then told me that when she tried calling Wambui's phone, it was answered by someone else who told her to look for her family members so they could go to the DCI Kilimani office," Wangari recalled.
Preliminary reports indicate Wambui accessed the apartment building at about 10 pm, briefly visited the reception area before proceeding to the rooftop, where she was reportedly taking photographs moments before the fatal fall. Police later recovered her handbag from the rooftop, containing her mobile phone, work uniform, and other personal belongings, while her body was discovered in a neighbouring building.
Family Rules Out Suicide, Wants Foul Play Investigated
The family says the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear and has ruled out suicide, insisting that investigators establish whether Wambui accidentally fell, was pushed, or whether foul play was involved. Relatives describe her as someone whose routine largely revolved around home and work, saying she had shown no signs of emotional distress, which makes her death even more difficult for them to comprehend.
The incident comes less than a week after a Grade 9 student at CITAM Schools Ngong died after reportedly falling from the rooftop of a school building, a case that also remains under police investigation and has renewed public concern over unexplained fatal falls.
Investigations Underway
Detectives from Kilimani Police Station are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to reconstruct Wambui's final movements before the incident, with investigators hoping to piece together the events leading to her fall.
Wambui's body has been moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to provide further clues as investigations continue. Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
