Former East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Abubakar Zein Abubakar has died. He passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Avenue Hospital in Nairobi.

The cause of his death had not been disclosed by the time of publication.

Zein served as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly between 2012 and 2022, representing Kenya at the regional body. He was a familiar figure within the Wiper Party, where he held a senior role in the party's presidential campaign structures.

Editorial note: Zein was appointed to head the Wiper Presidential Secretariat and Campaign team by party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in December 2024. Recent reporting indicates he may have since been succeeded in that specific role as part of a reshuffle of Musyoka's campaign team; this has not been independently confirmed at time of publication and will be updated as more details emerge.

He remained an active voice on governance and policy matters until his death.

News of his death has drawn tributes from across the political divide. ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale described him as a humble and soft-spoken leader.

"Rest in peace, Mheshimiwa Abubakar Zein. A good man has rested. A man of few words with a great smile," Etale said.

More tributes are expected as the news spreads across the political class and the public.
