ODM Youth League leader and former TUM students' president Elvis Otieno, popularly known as 'The Beast,' has died in Mombasa after suffering an epileptic attack that led to a fatal fall.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is in mourning following the death of its Youth League leader and former Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students' president, Elvis Otieno, popularly known as "The Beast."
Otieno died on the evening of Monday, July 20, in Mombasa after reportedly suffering an epileptic attack that led to a fatal fall, a condition he had lived with for many years. The tragic incident occurred just hours after he had joined friends at English Point in Nyali to watch the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, which Spain won 1-0.
ODM Pays Tribute
Confirming his passing, ODM described Otieno as an instrumental pillar of the party's youth wing.
"We are saddened by the news of the passing of Mr Elvis Otieno, aka The BEAST, a member of the ODM Youth League's Comrades Chapter and a former student leader at the Technical University of Mombasa, which occurred yesterday in Mombasa," the party stated. "The BEAST, as he was popularly known, was outgoing, cheerful and a good mobiliser who dedicated his life to championing the rights of the youth."
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who had spent time with Otieno the evening before his death, also paid tribute, describing him as a close friend and a dedicated community mobiliser.
"I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Elvis, a passionate youth leader, dedicated community mobiliser and a close friend whose commitment to empowering young people inspired many who knew him," Omollo said.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir also expressed his grief, describing Otieno as "a colossus, a larger-than-life personality whose presence, leadership and passion left an indelible mark on all who knew him," and extended condolences to his mother, partner, family and the wider TUM community.
A Voice for Youth Empowerment and Political Mobilisation
Otieno first built his reputation as a student leader at TUM before rising through the ranks of the ODM Youth League, becoming an active member of its Comrades Chapter and a familiar face within Mombasa's political circles. Beyond his ODM role, he was also widely recognised as a key supporter of President William Ruto's 2027 re-election bid, having spearheaded the Visionary Alliance for Ruto (VAR), a movement aimed at rallying student support for the President across higher learning institutions.
Beyond politics, Elvis was known for organising youth forums that brought together young people for dialogue, mentorship and civic engagement. Among his notable initiatives was the Kenya Youth Transition Initiative, a platform that earned him recognition as a respected voice among Kenya's youth.
Members of the ODM party, fellow leaders, friends and family have continued to extend their condolences following his passing.
