The US has renewed its worldwide security advisory, warning Americans including those in Kenya, after an Iranian strike in Jordan killed two US service members amid the ongoing Iran war.
The United States has issued a fresh worldwide security advisory urging its citizens, including those in Kenya, to exercise increased caution amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following fresh strikes in Iran.
In an advisory issued on Sunday, July 19, the U.S. Department of State said the global security environment remains complex, with the potential for unforeseen escalation. The department warned that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have previously been targeted, highlighting the security risks facing Americans abroad.
Background: An Active, Months-Long Conflict
The advisory is a renewal of a "Worldwide Caution" alert that has been in place since combat operations between the US and Iran began in late February 2026. The latest update came after an Iranian missile and drone strike in Jordan killed two US service members and left a third missing, marking one of the most serious escalations in the conflict so far. The US has continued conducting near-nightly strikes on Iranian targets, including surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure and underground weapons storage.
What the Advisory Says
The department cautioned that groups supportive of Iran could target U.S. interests overseas, including locations associated with the United States and American citizens. "Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation. We remind Americans in the region of the continued need for caution and encourage them to monitor the news for breaking developments," the advisory read in part.
"U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world," it added.
American citizens have been advised to prepare for potential travel disruptions, including flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures, linked to ongoing regional tensions. They have also been encouraged to stay vigilant and remain aware of their surroundings, including following guidance issued by respective U.S embassies.
Americans in Kenya have been told to follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
Kenya Named in Earlier Iranian State Media Claim
The advisory comes days after Iran's state-owned broadcaster, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), sparked concerns after claiming that Kenya possesses 'strategic military reserves' and would join the ongoing war in the Middle East 'at the right time'. The post, which appeared on IRIB's official X account on Thursday, July 9, quoted what it described as an international affairs expert who alleged that both Kenya and Nigeria had military reserves that would 'enter the field at the appropriate time'.
"Kenya and Nigeria also possess strategic military reserves that will enter the field at the appropriate time," the post read in part.
