From Roads to Rice Mills: Inside Taita Taveta's Sh49 Billion Development Wave

President Ruto's four-day visit to Taita Taveta highlights over 60 national government projects worth Sh49 billion, spanning roads, housing, health, agriculture and more.

Taita Taveta County is in the middle of one of its most ambitious development chapters yet, with more than 60 national government priority projects and programmes worth over Sh49 billion either completed, under implementation, or in the pipeline across the county's four constituencies.

A Presidential Visit with a Message

The scale of the investment was front and centre during President William Ruto's recent four-day working visit to the county, where he framed the projects as proof of promises kept to residents.

"I am committed to delivering every promise I made to Kenyans and you people of Taita Taveta. These multibillion-shilling projects demonstrate my commitment to you, and they shall be delivered for the betterment of each one of you," Ruto said, adding that no county, sub-county, or community would be left behind in the government's development agenda.

Roads and Power Leading the Way

Road infrastructure forms a major pillar of the programme. The 54-kilometre Mto Mwagodi-Dawida-Mbale-Wundanyi-Bura road is being upgraded to bitumen standard at a cost of Sh2.1 billion, while the Sh2 billion Cess (Nghonji)-Rekeke-Lake Jipe Phase One road and the Sh646.5 million Taita Taveta Package One and Two roads are substantially complete. Alongside the roadworks, 10,679 new last-mile electricity connections have pushed the county's customer base to 78,655.

Housing, Education and Markets

Affordable housing is another major component, with the Taveta Affordable Housing Project at KCB Estate delivering 831 units across eight blocks at Sh2.3 billion, and the Voi Affordable Housing Project adding 446 units at Sh1.2 billion. On the education front, government is developing a 1,680-bed students' village at Taita Taveta University worth Sh736 million, alongside facilities at KMTC campuses in Taveta and Voi.

Commerce is getting a boost too, with the Sh278.5 million Voi Modern Market under implementation and additional markets being developed in Mwatunge, Wundanyi and Maungu under the Economic Stimulus Programme.

Betting on Agriculture

The county's agricultural economy is receiving targeted investment aimed at value addition. A Sh130 million banana processing plant in Taveta is under development, the Sh115 million Taveta Rice Milling Plant has been completed, and a further Sh500 million Voi County Aggregation and Industrial Park is planned to support agro-processing, storage and logistics. Irrigation projects in Buruma, Tuhire Challa, Njukini and the Lower River Lumi/Afrika Kusini area round out the push to strengthen farm production.

County Leadership Welcomes the Investment

Governor Andrew Mwadime welcomed the projects, pointing to the benefits of collaboration between national and county government. "We thank you, Mr. President, and the national government for the ongoing projects in this county. We've been neglected before, but now we're reaping the fruits of collaboration," Mwadime said, pledging continued cooperation to ensure the projects translate into better livelihoods.

Health, ICT, Sports and Social Protection

The development agenda extends well beyond infrastructure. Moi County Referral Hospital-Voi, Taveta Sub-County Hospital and Wesu Sub-County Hospital are receiving equipment and upgrades, while Mwatate Sub-County Hospital is benefiting from laboratory improvements. On the digital front, a Jitume Lab in Mwatate joins completed Digital Hubs at Taveta Technical and Vocational College and Taita Taveta National Polytechnic.

Sports infrastructure is also getting attention through the ongoing Vindo Stadium project in Voi, designed to hold 10,000 spectators complete with an athletics track and pavilion, valued at between Sh760 million and Sh950 million.

On social protection, the Inua Jamii programme has channelled Sh863.6 million to 7,240 beneficiaries, the Hustler Fund has disbursed Sh614 million in digital micro-credit and matched savings for MSMEs, and the NYOTA programme has allocated Sh61 million benefiting 1,355 people through skills development and job placements. More than 245,000 residents are now registered under the Social Health Authority.

A Regional Shift, Says Joho

Speaking at the regional level, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Ali Hassan Joho described the scale of investment as unprecedented for the Coast. "You've restored the dignity of the people of Coast through these investments on a scale that was never seen before," Joho said.

The Bigger Picture

Taken together, the projects point to a development agenda increasingly built around connectivity, economic stimulation, stronger public services, and unlocking value from Taita Taveta's agricultural and natural-resource base — a shift local leaders hope will translate into tangible improvements in residents' daily lives in the years ahead.
