Kenya Meteorological Dept Issues Fresh Heavy Rainfall Warning for Nairobi and Central Highlands

Barely a week after deadly rains battered parts of the country, the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a new warning of heavy rainfall expected in Nairobi and surrounding areas.

The alert, released Thursday afternoon, covers the period from 9 PM on Thursday, March 12, to 9 AM on Friday, March 13, signaling moderate-to-heavy rainfall across Nairobi County and its neighboring regions.
“Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Nairobi and surrounding counties over the next 24 hours,” the department stated in its advisory.

Nairobi and Central Highlands Bracing for Torrential Rains
The central highlands, including Nairobi and Kiambu counties, are set for another round of showers and thunderstorms. Residents should expect cloudy mornings, occasionally giving way to sunny intervals, though light rainfall may still occur in high-altitude areas even during dry breaks. By afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are likely to intensify, adding to already saturated grounds from last week’s downpours.

Neighboring Counties on Alert
The rainfall advisory isn’t limited to Nairobi. Counties across the Central Highlands—including Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Laikipia, and Nyandarua—are also expected to experience significant rainfall tonight. Residents in these regions are advised to prepare for disrupted transport, potential flooding, and slippery roads.

Coastal Counties to See Light Showers
The coastline will experience rainfall too, though less severe. Counties including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River are forecasted to receive light showers tonight, with more sustained rainfall expected through Friday morning and afternoon, particularly along the south coast.
Western Kenya Not Spared
Counties in the Lake Victoria Basin, including Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, and Siaya, should brace for pockets of showers and thunderstorms tonight and again during Friday afternoon. The western and Rift Valley regions are also projected to receive heavy downpours, especially in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
In these areas, rain is expected mostly in the afternoons, following cloudy mornings, with some overnight showers mixed in, increasing the risk of flooding and waterlogging.

Key highlights from the weekly outlook include:
Morning showers over a few areas, gradually giving way to sunny intervals.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms, likely spreading to several counties.
Night showers over scattered areas, particularly in highland and western regions.
Residents across Nairobi, Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and the coast are urged to stay vigilant, monitor local weather updates, and take precautionary measures against potential flooding.
