President Ruto Kicks Off Four-Day Nyanza Development Tour: SGR Launch, Key Projects & Regional Growth on the Agenda

Introduction
President William Ruto has officially launched a highly anticipated four-day development tour of the Nyanza region, beginning Friday, March 20, 2026. The tour, which spans four counties — Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, and Siaya — marks one of the most ambitious presidential development visits to the region in recent years. From road projects and affordable housing to blue economy investments and a landmark railway launch, the itinerary signals a bold commitment to transforming Nyanza's development landscape.

A Packed Itinerary Across Four Counties
The President's schedule is nothing short of breathtaking. Across four days, Ruto is set to commission a wide array of development projects spanning infrastructure, water, housing, and the blue economy — all central pillars of the government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The tour kicked off in Kuria East constituency, Migori County, where the President unveiled the Kegonga Cluster Water Project and launched the Lower Kuja Irrigation Project in Nyatike constituency, as well as the Ngere-Mapera Road in Suna East Constituency.
On Sunday, the Head of State is expected to visit Homa Bay County, where he will attend an interdenominational prayer service in Kasipul, inspect ongoing works on the Adiedo-Karabok road in Karachuonyo, and commission the Rusinga Ring Road projects in Suba North.
The tour is expected to wrap up on Tuesday with the commissioning of the Usenge Pier by the Kenya Ports Authority and an affordable housing project in Nyatike, Migori County.

The Big Highlight: SGR Phase 2B Launch with President Museveni
The undisputed centerpiece of the entire tour is the Standard Gauge Railway groundbreaking. On Saturday, President Ruto will join Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at Kibos to commission the construction of Phase 2B of the SGR — a 369-kilometre line extending from Naivasha through Kisumu all the way to Malaba at the Kenya-Uganda border.
Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has described the project as a major milestone in infrastructure development that will enhance connectivity, boost trade, and spur regional integration across East Africa.
President Ruto has framed the SGR expansion as far more than a railway project. Western Kenya produces tea, maize, sugar, and rice, supports a vibrant fisheries sector in the Lake Victoria basin, and supplies critical inputs for agro-processing and industry. By extending the railway to Kisumu and ultimately to Malaba, Kenya is consolidating its role as the logistical backbone of East and Central Africa.

Leaders' Meeting at Kisumu State Lodge
Beyond the public project launches, the tour also carries significant political and governance undertones. President Ruto will host elected leaders from across the Nyanza region at the Kisumu State Lodge, where discussions will center on ongoing development projects and those in the pipeline. The meeting is expected to foster greater collaboration between the national government and regional leadership on shared development priorities.

Blue Economy and Road Infrastructure in Focus
Among the highlights of the Kisumu leg of the tour, the President will commission a blue economy project at Asat Beach in Seme sub-county, launch a road project in Kisumu West sub-county, and unveil an affordable housing project in Yala, Gem sub-county.
The Head of State will also inspect ongoing works on the Mamboleo-Chemelil-Kipsitet road — a critical transport corridor connecting Kisumu, Nandi, and Kericho counties that is expected to boost trade and support sugarcane farming in the wider region.
The government is also investing in irrigation infrastructure, revamping and constructing ports and ten landing sites along Lake Victoria, and reviving struggling sugar companies — all as part of broader efforts to stimulate economic growth across the Nyanza region.

Security Arrangements Firmly in Place
Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa has confirmed that all security arrangements have been finalised ahead of the President's visit. Security agencies have put comprehensive measures in place to ensure that all presidential meetings and public engagements proceed smoothly and without disruption.
Mworoa issued stern warnings against the use of abusive language or the carrying of weapons to any of the public functions, assuring that security officers will not hesitate to act against those who violate the law. She also called on politicians to sensitise their supporters to respect all leaders in attendance and urged Nyanza residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome the Head of State.

What This Tour Means for Nyanza's Future
Regional Commissioner Mworoa noted that the outlined projects are key to transforming the development face of the Nyanza region and form critical pillars of the BETA plan. President Ruto echoed this sentiment, noting that Nyanza will play a leading role in advancing Kenya's Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda, with the government investing heavily in infrastructure designed to stimulate the region's economic growth.
From water projects and irrigation to roads, housing, ports, and a game-changing railway extension, President Ruto's four-day Nyanza tour represents one of the most concentrated bursts of development activity the region has seen in years. For residents of Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, and Siaya, this week could mark the beginning of a transformative new chapter in regional development.
