Kenya Railways Corporation is set to roll out ultra-luxurious passenger coaches by July 2026, featuring onboard Wi-Fi, first-class dining, reclining seats, and bathing facilities.
Kenya Railways Unveils Ultra-Luxurious Coaches Set for July Rollout
Train travel in Kenya is about to get a serious upgrade. The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has unveiled plans for new luxury passenger coaches expected to be fully operational by July 2026, promising an experience that rivals business-class air travel.
During the presentation of the project on June 19, Kenya Railways leadership walked through the premium features set to transform the rail journey, from connectivity to comfort to convenience.
Wi-Fi, Dinner Service, and More
Top of the list of upgrades is onboard Wi-Fi, meaning passengers will be able to stay connected throughout their journey — a first for Kenya's rail network at this level.
But it doesn't stop there. Passengers will also enjoy first-class dinner service, with attendants serving meals and beverages directly at their seats throughout the trip.
"This is what you expect in the next month. There's Wi-Fi. We will serve you a first-class dinner. Anything that you would like to be served here, you will be surrounded by it," Kenya Railways stated.
Sleep, Stretch, and Stream: The New Travel Experience
For passengers used to cramped overnight journeys, the new coaches promise a different kind of comfort. The seats are designed to recline fully, and travelers will be provided with blankets for a comfortable night's sleep.
The seating itself appears to offer more legroom than conventional rail seating, with each seat fitted with an individual headrest and a personal entertainment screen mounted in the seatback — giving passengers their own onboard entertainment for the duration of the trip.
Adding to the airline-style feel, passengers will even have access to onboard bathing facilities, allowing them to freshen up before heading into work or continuing their day after arrival.
Mirroring SGR Premium Class Comfort
The new first-class coaches are designed to mirror the comfort levels of the SGR Premium Class, with Kenya Railways aiming to deliver an ultra-luxurious, business-class-style experience similar to what's found on commercial airlines.
This rollout comes hot on the heels of Kenya Railways' recent introduction of newer economy coaches, part of a broader push to enhance passenger comfort and improve service delivery across the network.
Will Ticket Prices Rise?
Currently, a first-class ticket between Nairobi and Mombasa costs Ksh4,500. But with the arrival of these new luxury coaches and their expanded amenities, passengers should brace for a possible price adjustment to reflect the enhanced travel experience.
For now, all eyes are on July 2026, when Kenya's rail travelers will get their first taste of what could be the most premium train experience the country has ever offered.
