Ndindi Nyoro Ditches UDA: "We Left the Wheelbarrow Long Ago"

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has confirmed his exit from President Ruto's UDA party, citing broken promises to Kenyans. He says he's consulting before announcing his next political move.

Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has confirmed that he has left President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA), citing what he called years of broken promises to ordinary Kenyans.

Speaking in his Murang'a constituency on Saturday, July 4, Nyoro said the decision had already been made, and that his focus now is on consulting widely before revealing his next political direction. "The people in the government are in position but they have abandoned Kenyans, and that is the reason all of us moved away from the governing party," he said.

He also took aim at UDA's signature wheelbarrow symbol, telling supporters: "There is no more person on top of a wheelbarrow or taking a wheelbarrow anywhere, here in our place, even across the country."

In earlier remarks on Friday, July 3, Nyoro went further, saying the wheelbarrow had essentially fallen apart as a symbol of the administration's credibility, citing failures in education, healthcare, employment, and business opportunities.

Nyoro's exit follows Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata's departure from UDA about a month earlier, after which Kang'ata joined the Linda Mwananchi movement. Political observers have floated similar possibilities for Nyoro — forming his own outfit, joining an existing party, or aligning with opposition figures under the Linda Mwananchi banner, though he has not confirmed any of these.

His relationship with the ruling coalition had visibly cooled in recent months, notably after he was removed as chairperson of the National Assembly's Budget and Appropriations Committee earlier this year.

Editorial note: Nyoro has not yet named his next political home. Any reporting on where he's headed next should be treated as speculation until he makes a formal announcement.
