VOCAL Africa Sues Wetangula for Defying Court Order Barring Active Politics

Activist Hussein Khalid, through VOCAL Africa, has filed contempt proceedings against Speaker Moses Wetangula for allegedly ignoring a court order barring him from active politics.

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid has escalated his legal battle against National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, filing contempt of court proceedings against him for allegedly flouting a court order that barred him from engaging in active politics.

The Announcement

Khalid, acting through the organization VOCAL Africa, announced the move on Monday, July 13, 2026. He accused Wetangula of proceeding with political engagements in open disregard of a court directive issued the previous week.

According to Khalid, the High Court had issued conservatory orders last week requiring both Wetangula and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to refrain from active political participation while a related case remained pending. The orders were issued under the court's Constitution and Human Rights jurisdiction, in a case involving Wetangula, Kingi, and three other respondents.

Court documents show the application was heard on July 13, 2026, before Justice David Mburu, who signed and issued the orders.

Despite the orders being in place, Wetangula reportedly went ahead and took part in multiple political activities. This prompted VOCAL Africa to escalate the matter by filing contempt of court proceedings against him.

What Happens Next

Contempt of court proceedings, if successful, can expose Wetangula to serious legal consequences, including a possible jail term. This places the Speaker of the National Assembly in an increasingly precarious legal position as the case continues to unfold in court.
