Kenya Met warns of moderate to heavy rains across the Coast, Western Kenya, Rift Valley and Central Kenya from September 13-17, alongside a cold weather advisory for several counties.
Kenyans in several parts of the country have been told to prepare for wet conditions over the coming week, as the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) forecasts moderate to heavy rains running from Sunday, September 13 to Thursday, September 17, 2026.
The forecast, published on Friday, September 11, shows the rains will be concentrated mainly in the Coast, Western Kenya, parts of the Rift Valley, and Central Kenya, including Nairobi. Most of the rainfall is expected to fall in the afternoons, though a number of regions will also see morning showers.
Coast Region
Mombasa residents can expect a familiar pattern through the week — light showers every morning, with sunny afternoons except on Tuesday, when conditions are likely to shift. Kwale, Lamu, Kilifi and Taita Taveta will see a similar rhythm, with light morning showers forecast for Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Northern Kenya
Garissa, Mandera and Marsabit are expected to receive light afternoon showers on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Wajir will also see light afternoon showers, though only on Sunday and Tuesday.
Central Kenya, Including Nairobi
Kiambu, Nairobi, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nyeri and Murang'a are all listed to receive rain from Sunday through Wednesday this week. Nyandarua will see afternoon showers on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, while Kirinyaga can expect light rain on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Western Kenya and the Rift Valley
West Pokot is forecast for light afternoon showers on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet will see light afternoon showers on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with a moderate downpour expected on Monday specifically.
Further west, in the Lake Victoria basin counties of Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori, rains are expected on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
Cold Weather Advisory
Alongside the rain forecast, Kenya Met has also issued a warning on falling night temperatures in several counties. Nyandarua will record the coldest nights of the week, dropping to 6°C on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Samburu will see similarly cold conditions, opening the week at 6°C on Sunday before climbing gradually to 10°C on Monday and Tuesday, and 11°C by midweek.
Elsewhere, Machakos will range between 10°C and 13°C at night, while Embu could dip to a low of 10°C on Monday. Kitui's night temperatures will hold between 12°C and 15°C.
Meru will see a more noticeable drop as the week goes on, falling from 15°C to as low as 11°C by Thursday. Murang'a will range between 11°C and 13°C, and Kiambu will sit between 11°C and 13°C. In Nairobi, night temperatures are expected to range from 12°C to 15°C.
Residents in the affected counties are advised to plan for wet mornings or afternoons depending on their region, and to keep warm clothing on hand given the chilly nights forecast through the week.
