What began as an ordinary evening errand for Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi ended in a violent, politically charged attack that has left him hospitalised in Nairobi and the country's opposition circles reeling with shock and outrage.
The Senator, a prominent figure within ODM's opposition-aligned faction and a close ally of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, was set upon by a group of gun-wielding individuals in Kisumu in what his allies are already describing as a targeted, politically motivated assault. He has since been airlifted to Nairobi for urgent medical attention, and the full extent of his injuries has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Here is everything that has been officially confirmed so far.
How the Evening Began: A Haircut, a Coffee, and Then Violence
According to a detailed account released by Osotsi's office, the Senator's evening in Kisumu followed a completely routine sequence of events — the kind that would raise no flags for any public figure going about their personal business.
Osotsi had visited the Acacia area for a routine haircut before proceeding to Java Restaurant, one of Kisumu's most recognisable and frequented establishments. At Java, he spent approximately thirty minutes interacting with members of the public — a common practice for elected officials who regularly engage informally with constituents.
It was during this time, in what should have been an entirely unremarkable public interaction, that the situation turned violent.
The Attack: Armed Men, Political Interrogation, and Physical Assault
A group of individuals — described as gun-wielding — confronted Senator Osotsi inside or in the vicinity of the restaurant. What makes this attack particularly alarming, and particularly political in its character, is what the assailants reportedly did before resorting to violence.
According to information from Osotsi's team, the group did not simply assault the Senator. They first questioned him about his political stance — a detail that transforms this from a random act of violence into something far more deliberate and threatening. The men then subjected him to physical manhandling, leaving him seriously injured and in need of emergency medical evacuation.
The brazenness of the attack — carried out in a public restaurant, by individuals reportedly in possession of firearms, in broad enough circumstances for witnesses to have observed it — has stunned political observers and security analysts alike.
Edwin Sifuna Breaks the News and Condemns the Attack
It was Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, ODM Secretary-General and one of Osotsi's closest political allies, who first broke the news of the attack to the public. Sifuna confirmed that he had spoken directly with Osotsi's team following the incident, providing the first credible account of what had taken place.
Sifuna did not mince words in his response. He strongly condemned the assault in the clearest possible terms, calling it a brazen attack on an elected representative, and demanded that police act swiftly and decisively to identify, pursue, and bring to justice those responsible.
The fact that Sifuna — himself a polarising and politically prominent figure within Kenya's current opposition landscape — was the one to go public with the news underscores the political dimensions of the incident. Both men have been vocal critics of the current political establishment, and both have previously alleged intimidation of opposition-aligned voices.
Airlifted to Nairobi: The Race for Medical Attention
Following the attack, Senator Osotsi was airlifted to Nairobi for urgent medical attention — a decision that signals the seriousness of his injuries. Medical evacuation by air is not a routine response to minor injuries; the use of an airlift strongly suggests that his condition required specialised care unavailable or inaccessible locally, and that time was considered a critical factor in his treatment.
As of the time of this publication, the full extent of Senator Osotsi's injuries has not been publicly disclosed by his office or medical personnel and Governor James Orengo was at the hospital. Updates are expected as his condition is assessed and stabilised.
