High Court Quashes Aisha Jumwa's Appointment as Kenya Roads Board Chairperson — Declared Unconstitutional and Unlawful

photo: Former KRB Boss, Aisha Jumwa./courtesy In what legal commentators are already describing as one of the most consequential rulings on public appointments in recent Kenyan judicial history, the High Court has struck down the appointment of former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa Katana as non-executive Chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB) — declaring it unconstitutional, unlawful, and void ab initio , meaning illegal from the very beginning. Delivering the ruling, Justice Bahati Mwamuye was unambiguous in his findings: the appointment process failed to comply with the mandatory statutory framework set out in law, and no amount of presidential goodwill, political loyalty, or gazette publication could retroactively cure that fundamental illegality. "The appointment of Hon. Aisha Jumwa Katana as a member of the Kenya Roads Board is unconstitutional and unlawful ab initio as it did not comply with Section 7 of the Kenya Roads Boards Act and Articles 10, 47 and 2...

Bruno Fernandes Makes Premier League History in Old Trafford Thriller

Man United 3-2 Nottingham Forest — Fernandes Joins Henry and De Bruyne in the Record Books

Old Trafford witnessed a piece of Premier League history on Sunday afternoon. Bruno Fernandes equalled the Premier League record for the most assists in a season after registering his 20th of the campaign in Manchester United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest. It was a moment that placed the Portuguese captain alongside two of the greatest playmakers the English top flight has ever seen.

He has now levelled the record jointly held by Arsenal's Thierry Henry from the 2002-03 season and Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne from 2019-20. And with one game remaining, the outright record is very much within reach.

How the Record Was Set

The record-equalling moment arrived in the 76th minute when his ball across the box was turned in by Bryan Mbeumo at Old Trafford. It was a fitting way to reach the landmark — a crisp, drilled delivery that Mbeumo simply had to prod home for his first goal since February.

Fernandes had thought he had achieved the feat during United's 3-2 win over Liverpool on May 3, when his header was eventually touched into the net by Benjamin Sesko. But the fact Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman got a hand to the ball and knocked it onto the Slovenian striker meant Opta, the Premier League's official statistics partner, did not award him the assist.

The United captain has arguably benefitted from the growing importance placed upon set pieces in the Premier League this season, with only 10 of his 20 assists coming from open play, compared to Henry's 18 and De Bruyne's 17

The Match: Five Goals, One Huge VAR Row

First Half

United came flying out of the blocks. Luke Shaw volleyed the hosts in front after just five minutes — marking United's earliest league goal at Old Trafford since January 2024. The contest was lively but both sides spurned chances before the break, with Mbeumo striking the post after rounding goalkeeper Matz Sels on the break, then skying over early in the second half.

The Controversial Second Goal

United went back ahead in the 55th minute when Matheus Cunha stroked home after Mbeumo controlled the ball using his outstretched arm before having a shot blocked. VAR Matthew Donohue sent referee Michael Salisbury to review the incident on the monitor, only for Salisbury to stick with his original decision and award the goal after a lengthy review. Forest were furious — and with good reason, as replays made the handball hard to dispute.

Forest's Fight and the Record Moment

Forest had levelled through Morato's header before Cunha's disputed goal, and they kept pressing. Gibbs-White was denied by goalkeeper Senne Lammens racing off his line moments after going 2-1 down. But Fernandes' record-equalling cross settled the contest — briefly, at least. Gibbs-White pulled one back with a smart finish from an Anderson cross to make it 3-2, setting up a nervy finish that United survived.

If Fernandes provides one assist when United visit Brighton next week, he will not only set a new Premier League record, but equal the best single-season haul across Europe's top five leagues. Thomas Müller and Lionel Messi jointly hold that record on 21 assists, as far as Opta's records go.

Fernandes had one game left to set the outright record — and was inches away from it on Sunday, when Diogo Dalot hit the post from his pass deep into stoppage time.

Carrick's United Renaissance

Carrick has won 11 of 16 games since replacing Ruben Amorim and has delivered Champions League football for next season, and now looks set to be given the chance to impress on a two or three-year deal.

Sunday also marked a sentimental farewell for a United legend. Casemiro received a standing ovation in his final Old Trafford appearance, celebrating the news that Michael Carrick would be staying on as head coach.

Gibbs-White's 78th-minute strike, meanwhile, marked the 1,000th goal in the Premier League this season.

Goals: Shaw 5', Cunha 55', Mbeumo 76'; Morato 53', Gibbs-White 78'

Key Stat: United finished with a whopping 29 shots, with Fernandes creating eight chances — the joint-most he has managed in a league game this term — as the Red Devils tallied 4.19 expected goals.
