EALA MP Kanini Kega narrowly escaped an armed attack at Kasuku Center in Ol Jororok after leaving a DCP rally in Ol Kalou, abandoning his vehicle to flee on foot as gunmen destroyed the car.
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Kanini Kega was attacked while driving home from a campaign rally in Ol Kalou town.
The incident happened on the night of Monday, July 13, as the lawmaker, a close ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was returning from a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) campaign event for candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau. Kega had reportedly been trailed from Ol Kalou town before armed men caught up with his convoy at Kasuku Center in the neighbouring Ol Jororok constituency.
The EALA legislator and his driver managed to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot as the attackers closed in on them. The assailants then turned on the empty vehicle, extensively damaging it as the two men escaped into the darkness.
Police who later visited the scene recovered live rounds near the wrecked car, deepening concerns over what really unfolded that night.
Images obtained by Don Sami Live later showed the shaken legislator taking refuge inside a nearby homestead in Ol Kalou. He was hosted by a local family, including children, as he tried to process the terrifying ordeal he had just survived.
While in hiding, Kega spoke of being pursued by armed officers who allegedly pointed guns at him and his driver during the chase.
"Kenyans, you can see I'm under attack. I've been chased by armed police officers. They pointed guns at me. We were only able to escape. You can see I'm being hosted by these children. Ruto, you are not going to kill us unless you kill all of us," stated the visibly shaken legislator.
He described the attack as a deliberate attempt on his life, linking it to an ongoing dispute involving three vehicles, and vowed not to back down from his political fight.
"But we are not going to relent. You wanted to kill me over three vehicles. You have even sprayed my vehicle," stated Kega. "I am only alive by the grace of God. But we are not going to relent in the fight. I want to tell Kenyans that I'm temporarily saved in this house."
These events add to the political violence experienced not only in the constituency but also in most parts of the country. The Linda Mwananchi rallies in both Kisumu and Nyahururu saw two people killed, with the driver of Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata also shot during the Nyahururu unrest.
