Kenya Railways Cargo Train Bursts Into Flames at Simba, Kajiado.

A Kenya Railways cargo train operated by Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd caught fire at Simba Station in Kajiado County. Here's what officials have confirmed so far.

A cargo train operating along the Magadi railway corridor caught fire on Wednesday evening, July 1, at Simba Station in Kajiado County, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air as locals rushed to the scene.

Kenya Railways has since confirmed that the affected train belonged to Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd, the mining and chemicals firm that regularly moves soda ash and related cargo along the narrow-gauge Magadi line.

What Happened

Footage obtained by Don Sami Live shows the train's engine engulfed in fire, with flames spreading to affect several locomotives as onlookers gathered to assess the situation. Eyewitnesses say the fire appeared to start in the train's cabin before intensifying. Several locomotives were damaged in the blaze, and residents joined emergency responders in efforts to bring the fire under control.

Dozens of residents gathered at the scene as the train burned, with some eyewitnesses estimating that goods worth millions of shillings may have been lost.

What Kenya Railways Has Confirmed

In a statement issued late Wednesday night, Kenya Railways confirmed the incident and said preliminary findings point to a possible mechanical fault involving the locomotive's fuel system. Authorities believe fuel leakage from damage to the fuel tank may have sparked the blaze, though the corporation was quick to note that investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact cause and sequence of events.

At the time of publishing, there was no official confirmation of casualties. A typical freight train crew consists of about three people — the locomotive driver, driver assistant and conductor.

Disruption Along the Magadi Corridor

The Magadi railway line is a key route for transporting soda ash and industrial cargo from the Magadi mines to connecting points for onward distribution. An incident of this scale is likely to disrupt cargo movement along the corridor as Kenya Railways and Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd carry out safety inspections and damage assessments before normal operations can resume.

What We're Still Waiting On

Several details remain unconfirmed at this stage:

  • The exact extent of damage to the train and surrounding infrastructure
  • Whether any injuries occurred among crew or bystanders
  • The final, confirmed cause of the fire, pending Kenya Railways' full investigation

Don Sami Live will update this story as more verified information becomes available.
